Old railway bridge (D)

img_6330_28_29This beautiful landmark is situated only a few kilometers past the German border. It was an important link in the old railway track that connected the Dutch city Zevenaar with the German city Kleve.

The evening I was here to scout the location, the light conditions weren’t so wonderful. Still I was able to capture some nice images. As this locations is within an half hour driving from my home, I will definitely revisit the bridge in the future.

Le petit moulin à farine (NL)

img_2974_5_6It was in the summer of 2010 when I first visited this millery. I passed the building and  I realized that it could be a potential urbex location. I turned the car and headed back. I tried the door and it was open. Nobody was around, not even in the surrounding buildings.

The millery appeared to be really small. Almost the entire second floor was collapsed. The stairway, or what was left of it, led you to the top of the distribution containers. I was able to take some pictures of both the first and second floor. I wanted to see the top-most floor, but sadly I couldn’t find a safe way to get in. Perhaps some other time. Continue reading

Stone Factory E. (N)

img_5887_8_9Thousands of people pass by daily, unaware of the beautiful old bricks factory old. From the moment I got involved in urban exploration, I wanted to explore this factory. Over the past years I’ve checked the site a dozen of times, unable to find an entry. Until yesterday.

Unfortunately the former ovens aren’t accessible. The adjacent buildings that are used for storage block access to the oven entries. There is a way in, but the ovens were really dark. As I explored alone, I put safety first and didn’t decent into them. Continue reading

Villa W. (NL) + update

img_7731_29_30According to the local government, Villa W. is a archaeological building that needs to be protected. The current owner inherited the house when his father died. He started renovating the house, but the government forbid to continue the renovation. This resulted in a conflict between the owner and the government. Nothing was done to keep the house from decaying since. The condition of the house gets worse every day. If nothing is done on short notice, the house will someday collapse eventually. Maison DD (NL)

img_4790_1_2Maison DD is a former farmhouse with a small in-house stable. It is a quite small house with only two rooms, maisonette and two storage rooms. The house is in really bad condition with large holes in the roof and supporting studs to keep the walls and floors from collapsing.

The main area has been used as an working area. As you can see in the pictures, an electrical saw table and a large working bench have been left. It’s a lovely place where time stood still.

I discovered this location more than a year ago. Every time I passed it, I promised myself to visit it really soon but until yesterday it never came to an actual visit. Here is a selection of the pictures I took. Continue reading

DRU (NL) revisted

img_2941_2_3During my first visit to the former DRU factory in December 2009, I wasn’t able to access the second largest building. Knowing reconstruction started, I went back to see if I was able to get inside this building.

Luck was on my side. It was mid winter and it was so cold that the constructors needed to pause often, allowing me to get inside unseen and capture my images.

Monastery BV

img_3155_6_7enhancerCoincidence or not, but I visited this former monastery exactly one year ago. The monastery is guarded by a group of students that live in the monastery on an anti-squat basis. At that time I didn’t know this. I noticed the main fence was open, I walked in and started curiously looking around.

Walking around the building, looking for an entrance, I suddenly noticed an open door. I was especially interested in the monasteries chapel, as it was supposed to be quite unique. I wanted to ask for permission, but the caretaker wasn’t ‘home’. I went in and found the chapel. I took the pictures I wanted and got out as quick as possible. Unfortunately the chapel was completely empty but the mission was nevertheless accomplished.

Hippodrome B. (B)

img_4312_3_4Hippodrome B. must have been such an overwhelming place. The architecture of the main building is so impressive. Unfortunately there is not much left of it nowadays. The buildings are completely ruined by vandals and have graffiti on both the inside and the outside. It’s a shame to see such a beautiful location in this state.

The location was a bit disappointing, I still tried to capture the essence of if, hoping to show some of it’s former glory.

Fort W. (B)

img_4484Fort W. is a well known urbex location in the middle of Belgium. It was build from 1878 until 1893 in order to protect the city from bombardments with a new kind of artillery. In 1914 the fortress was needed for the first time. It proved a disaster, the German guns shot the fortress into little pieces, out of the range of the Belgian guns. A direct hit in the munition storage caused a part of the fortress to collapse and burry more than 70 people inside its galleries. Continue reading

Bloso Outdoor (B)

img_4243_1_2Bloso Outdoor is an outdoor sports facility near the Belgium village Hofstade. This is the place of the well known abandoned outdoor swimming pool with it’s characteristic buildings.

It’s really hard to come up with a series of original photo’s at a location like this. Not that that is a requirement, but it’s always nice to add something personal and unique to your pictures.

Since this summer the Bloso Outdoor facility is turned into some kind of  recreational park with a huge children’s playground. The property is surrounded by fences and you’ll need to pay parking costs and an entry fee to access it. Continue reading
